There is a general understanding in the world of games (and perhaps beyond) that if the sponsor’s name is included in the title, particularly if it represents something as uninspiring as a potato chip, one has about a 99 percent chance of finding the game worthy of no more than five minutes of their time. Often, not even that. Behold, the non-conformist, groundbreaking one percent! Dorito’s Crash Course 2, free to download with multiplayer included, is a well-presented sequel that combines the addictive joys of platform hurdling with the wet n’ wild antics of television’s Wipeout.

In a time when earthly human existences are being converted to never-ending, open world RPGs, Crash Course 2 proves the simple things in life maintain the ability to captivate, motivate, and alleviate (stress) without monopolizing dog-walking time or that thing called face-to-face social interaction. Like its predecessor, Crash Course 2 centers around multiplayer interaction, allowing the player to race against friends and/or their recorded best times. However, this time around, less emphasis has been placed on speed alone. Instead, there is the addition of collectible stars and in-game objectives as random as keeping a ghost competitor on your screen for the duration of the run. Accomplishing these tasks allows the player to spend their earned credits, which are in no way of actual monetary value, unlocking additional levels, abilities and costumes. Yes, costumes.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     The original Crash Course offered levels themed according to continents. The sequel has taken a step back to the classics and incorporates more general themes; including UFO infested jungles, icy Antarctic slopes, the sweltering sands of Egypt, and the sea shanty revelry of Pirate Island.  Perhaps most commendable is the developer’s attention to detail, improving the game whilst sticking firmly to that which the Crash Course title represents. Such improvements include being able to grip ledges, wall-run/jump and utilizing unlockable pathways. The game is not without some expected frustrations, such as bugs that send players back to the main menu or the occasional infuriating inability to achieve specific goals without painstaking repeated attempts, but nothing crucial enough to overwhelm the overall enjoyment this free Xbox 360 game presents.

All-in-all, Dorito’s Crash Course 2 is more than adequate, family-friendly fun, that offers gamers goals and the satisfaction that comes with achieving them. So why not grab some chips and a controller, take a seat and lead avatar you on a hopping, sliding, hammer-smashing adventure? Oh how Dorito’s would love my totally unsponsored plug for chips. Seriously, I received nothing for that. Aren’t I nice? Well, I did receive this quality free game which is available to all, so I guess I’m not that nice. But I digress, Crash Course 2 is good and the adage that nothing in life is free, just might be less than absolute.
